The Blues are going to make another awesome run for the big prize. I just hope this year they can get past the Kings. I'd love to see them at it again this year, but only in the Western Final |

They're not deep enough in the middle to hang out with the big boys just yet. |

Jeff Quirin: Lunch Bites: Thoughts on Morrow Signing
Thoughts on the St. Louis Blues signing winger Brenden Morrow. - Jeff Quirin
Am I the only Blues fan that doesn't like the Morrow signing? An aging veteran who plays a gritty, physical game, but has major injury history. To add Morrow, you're taking speed out of the lineup.
Do I think that Morrow is a leader? Yes. Do I think he has a lot to offer the Blues? No. |

Granted he would have been a much better acquisition three or four years ago....he's taken a lot of abuse over the years. But for what the Blues are looking for from him, he's a good fit.
I look at it this way, this gives the coaches some flexibility. When the Blues go up against a big, physical team, they can dress big. Against smaller, more skilled teams, the Blues go smaller.
Injuries always play a part and this gives the Blues just another option. |

Quick question for Blues fans:
I watch about 40-50 Blues games a year, based on where I live. My question is this: Are you guys willing to go into the postseason again with some combination of Halak/Elliott/Allen, or do you think you guys will pay the price for Ryan Miller, who the Sabres have to give up at some point?
Personally, I think the Blues would be the scariest team in the league if they had Ryan Miller, but maybe that's just me. |

If you look at Ryan Miller's career numbers and Halak's career numbers, they're pretty similar. Who's got the better playoff record? Halak by far.
Ryan Miller:

I don't get the Ryan Miller to St Louis talk. IMO, he is not an upgrade over Halak.
Halak has played in just over 1 playoff game the last two years because of injuries. The Blues are ready to go into the playoffs with Halak as the starter. |

Why do you think Miller is a better goalie than Halak? |

Truthfully? I think Ken Hitchcock's system makes goalies look a little better than they are (remember, he coached in Philadelphia too, so I got to see it first-hand), and I think Ryan Miller (who has won a Vezina Trophy, and it was deserved) has been behind a far-worse defense than the Blues have had over the last few seasons.
I think the Blues are an elite team, with maybe the best defense in the NHL. I sure wish the Flyers could roll out Bouuwmeester-Pietrangelo, Jackman-Shattenkirk, and Leopold-Polak.
The Sabres last year put out a defense of...well, I don't want to take a shot at anybody's favorite team. I think it's fair to say that their defense isn't as capable as the Blues'.
I just think, again, think, that Miller's a very, very good goalie playing on a team that hasn't been very stable, doesn't have the talent or system that the Blues have, and I do think that if he were in St. Louis, the Blues would be the best team in the NHL, on paper. (Again, on paper, and just my opinion.)

Miller's salary handcuffs the Blues. I think they probably took a look at this during the summer and determined they're better where they're at now. It's been a while now since Ryan Miller's been anything special IMO.
I don't think Halak will be an issue, if anything, the Blues might have to address the backup situation if Elliot / Allen struggles. |

Depends on the cost. If it's a roster player other than Halak; no. Or if it's a top prospect, no. Put simply, we are a super young team, and it's not worth giving up a long term piece for one shot at the very beginning of our window.
We can afford to give Halak a shot at the playoffs for us. Then if he fails, go for Miller in the off-season... or hopefully, Lundqvist. Think we would be scary with Miller? Imagine (or likely dream for Blues fans) this team with Lundqvist in net. |

This is off topic, but what is Elliott's role looking like? I have him at a reasonable salary on my fantasy team and our rosters for 2013-14 are due this week. I am hoping he'll get in at least 30 games.

How is this different from Mike Keane or Dallas Drake? How did those pan out? |

Unless he totally sucks it up like he did in January last year, he'll see 30 games.
Well, or like he sucked it up in February. Also March. |

Great signing by the Blues. Wish the 'Hawks could have moved some smaller salary (Brookbank?) to make this happen. |

You mean aside from the quality and depth of the other forwards on the roster? Context is everything, my friend. |
